Modest Origins :

Méribel's history dates back to the early 20th century when the region was still a vast, sparsely populated wilderness. In 1938, British entrepreneur Peter Lindsay, accompanied by his French friend Émile Allais, saw the Méribel valley. Captivated by the natural beauty of the place, Lindsay decided to create a winter sports resort that would harmoniously combine skiing, comfort, and aesthetics.

The Birth of Méribel :

Thanks to Peter Lindsay's initiative and his partners, Méribel was born in 1938. The first  ski lift appeared this years in the village of Les Allues. The following year,  the construction of the first hotels and wooden chalets were constructed in accordance with the traditional mountain architecture, giving the resort its authentic and warm character. In 3 years, the British already owned 40 hectares of land in the region. However, the development of the resort was interrupted during the World War II. It started again when the war was over. Lindsay, founder of Méribel hired famous architects such as Paul-Jacques Grillo who won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1937, as well as Christian Durupt and André Detour. The goal was to make sure the construction were in harmony with the Savoyard style. They had to use wood and local stone  for the main structure and mountain slates for the sloping roofs.

Quickly, Méribel became a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts, attracting skiers from around the world.
